The U.S. Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Board of Directors, chaired by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, held its quarterly meeting in March 2012. During the meeting, the Board approved a $354.8 million compact with Zambia. The compact, which addresses one of Zambia’s most binding constraints to economic growth, invests in the water sector in the rapidly urbanizing capital city of Lusaka.

New methods for better purification of wastewater

Before wastewater reaches recipient waters, nutrients must be removed in order to avoid eutrophication and large algal blooms, which may result in serious damage to animal and plant life. Robert Almstrand at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, has shown in his thesis that better removal of nitrogen from wastewater can be achieved by providing the bacteria that purify the water with alternating high and low levels of nutrients.

When it comes to rehabilitating sewers with large nominal diameters under complex boundary conditions, the spiral-wound pipe rehabilitation technology comes into its own. This was the case in the French district of Le Pecq near Paris in October 2011, where 281 metres of a DN 3000-3300 rain water collector were rehabilitated with a DN 2750 spiral-wound pipe liner of SEKISUI SPR Europe, manufactured by its subsidiary SEKISUI Rib Loc. The rehabilitation project involved the use of the SPR™ PE spiral-wound pipe process, previously known as RIBLINE. The Le Pecq project saw a new European nominal diameter record being set for this form of spiral-wound pipe rehabilitation technology.
